Kendell started coming to SeaCity CrossFit in the beginning of September 2011.
Q: How did you originally hear about CrossFit, and for how long now have you been at it?
A: From my buddy Joe Willesden, who was already a member. I've been at it for 6 months.
Q: What were some of your original goals? Have any of those changed?
A: To get in shape for our hunting trip in the mountains in Colorado. Now my goals are to get in the best possible shape I can and be able to correctly do all the exercises each day.
Q: Has your perception of CrossFit changed?
A: At first I had no idea what I was getting into. CrossFit is a total body workout.
Q: What do you like best about it?
A: Every day is something different. I like the mix and match of exercises.
Q: What is your least favorite exercise?
A: I know what you're thinking (burpees) NO! It's overhead squats. I suck at them, need lots of work to get better.
Q: What is your occupation?
A: I work for Nalco, a specialty chemical company that services the oilfield, refineries, power plants. I work at the Flint Hills refineries.
Q: What changes have you noticed in yourself, both physically and mentally, since becoming a part of SCCF?
A: When I first started I was very intimidated by all the young people running circles around me. I kept telling myself that I was here for me and just keep trying. By sticking with it I have made huge strides physically by losing 35#. Now I'm sometimes able to keep up with the kids!
Q: What are some of the goals you have for yourself this year?
A: To be able to do every exercise without substituting something else. Handstand pushups, double unders, toes to bar. It bothers me to sub an exercise, I want to do what's on the board.
Q: What is your favorite WOD?
A: I get up every morning and check the website, and the ones that make you say "who the hell thinks this stuff up?" are always the best ones.
Q: Least favorite WOD?
A: None, some just take longer to recover from.
Q: Did you think a sport of elite fitness would ever be for you?
A: I never thought I would be hooked on workouts. Now when I miss a WOD I feel like I'm cheating.
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
A: I have a floating cabin in Baffin Bay where I try to spend all my free time. Nothing is better than watching the sun come up standing waist deep throwing lures to a monster trout.
Q: What is your favorite paleo meal?
A: A good steak and grilled asparagus
Q: Favorite cheat meal?
A: I have not cheated during the challenge, but I sure miss my wife's Mexican food.
Q: Advice for newbies?
A: Don't stop coming to the gym. I would to tell you it gets easier but it don't. I would hate to know I had to start over again. After a couple months you'll be hooked.
